Tooth Bonding – A Simple Solution For A Brighter Smile

Written on October 19th, 2009 by adminno shouts

The application of composite resin tooth bonding is a quick and simple for solution for minor cosmetic dentistry problems such as worn enamel, small chips, cracks, gaps and discolouration. Performed by a cosmetic dentist in a single visit, tooth bonding can have you out of the office with a brighter, more attractive smile in a matter of hours.

What is Tooth Bonding?

Cosmetic dentists use a composite resin material very similar to the appearance of the natural tooth to cover and fill areas of concern.

The results last from seven to eleven years. Because the material can be polished, shaped and defined to closely match natural teeth, it is an ideal solution for patients with minor cosmetic problems. An experienced cosmetic dentist can produce natural, beautiful results quickly.

Tooth bonding may be covered by your dental insurance plan if it is necessary for structural reasons.

If you must foot the bill yourself and are having difficulty saving money for the procedure, ask your cosmetic dentist about financing options. Dental bonding is one of the least expensive options for tooth restoration and the total cost depends on the extent of the work to be done, the expertise of the cosmetic dentist performing the work and the number of teeth you are having bonded.

Tooth bonding is a great alternative for patients who fear the unnatural look of silver amalgam fillings or the pain of having an entire tooth removed and replaced.

In the case of decay, the damaged area is removed and simply replaced with the composite resin. Gaps are filled, with the resin carefully shaped to look as natural as possible. Entire areas of discolouration are covered over, hiding the damage and protecting the enamel.

Is Tooth Bonding Painful?

No. It is one of the simplest procedures available and does not require the use of anaesthetics. Your cosmetic dentist begins by evaluating your teeth and overall oral health to determine whether tooth bonding is the right solution for you.

Depending on the level of tooth damage and wear, they may decide that tooth bonding will work for some teeth, while others will require more extensive work such as veneers or crowns.

Working with a qualified, experienced cosmetic dentist should leave you feeling confident that the results will be as good as you expected – or better! Cosmetic dentistry technology allows dentists to map out the work they plan to do and show the patient images of the results they can expect. Ask to see their plans before approving the course of treatment.

An experienced cosmetic dentist will also have a portfolio of success stories to share with you.

How is Tooth Bonding Done?

Once the cosmetic dentist has determined the course of action, they apply a mild etching solution to the teeth they will be working on. This creates tiny, fine lines in the tooth’s enamel. This roughened surface is easier for the bonding solution to adhere to.

Your cosmetic dentist will choose from a wide selection of resins to find the shade most similar to your natural teeth.

If other teeth are discoloured from food stains or smoking, consider having a teeth whitening treatment performed before the bonding process. The dentist can then match the resin to your new, whiter shade.

Once the resin is selected and the surface of the tooth prepared, the cosmetic dentist begins by applying a thin layer to the surface of the tooth. A high-intensity laser is used to cure the resin, making it harden on the tooth. This process is repeated several times to create many thin layers of the resin on the tooth, each hardening in a matter of mere minutes.

Once the cosmetic dentist is satisfied with the amount of resin on the tooth, they go to work shaping and contouring the tooth to closely match the natural teeth. The final step is a buff and polish. This type of bonding is best for small imperfections and covering discolouration.

Tooth bonding can also be accomplished using custom-made porcelain fillings. The cosmetic dentist takes a molded impression of your teeth and sends it to a dental laboratory. This procedure requires two visits. The first visit consists of the dental impression process and the application of a temporary filling.

The second sees the cosmetic dentist apply the permanent porcelain filling. Patients might choose this option because, although it takes longer and is more expensive, porcelain is even more natural looking, durable and stain-resistant than the composite resin bonding material. This type of bonding also works better on larger chips, cracks and holes.

How Do I Care For My Bonded Teeth?

Composite resin is a porous material, so smokers will find that it stains over time. The solution for this, of course, is to avoid smoking after having this treatment.

Coffee, tea and red wine can also affect the colour of the resin. Use a straw to drink these liquids if you choose to continue enjoying them. Avoid the activities that led to the damage in the first place.

Regular brushing, flossing and dental check-ups are an important part of your after-care. Composite resin bonding lasts for up to 11 years and porcelain up to 15, but accidents, poor oral hygiene and tooth decay can all speed the deterioration of the material. If you notice severe discolouration, cracking, chipping or a missing filling, consult with your cosmetic dentist immediately to have it repaired or replaced.

Prompt treatment helps to protect the healthy tooth underneath.

Total Smile Makeover – Our Top Five Tips For Success

Written on October 12th, 2009 by adminno shouts

For some, the chance for a bright, shining new smile is a dream come true. Many patients save money for years or even take out loans so that they can afford the cosmetic dentistry help they need.

In the past, extensive dental work was a painful undertaking with a long recovery time. Cosmetic dentistry has now evolved to the point that a full smile makeover can be performed in only a few visits, with little downtime for recovery.

When it’s time for a total smile makeover, use our Top Five Tips to ensure that you get the long lasting results you desire:

1.

Choose a Great Cosmetic Dentist

The right cosmetic dentist can make your smile makeover experience a great one. Ask friends and family who have had cosmetic work such as bridges, veneers, or teeth whitening for referrals. Or, check your local Yellow Page listings to find qualified cosmetic dentists in your area. Your regular dentist may even recommend one for you.

Once you have located a few different cosmetic dentists, call to book an office visit. This is not a consultation and you should not expect to pay a fee.

This initial visit allows you to determine if the office is one you can be comfortable having your work done in. The cosmetic dentist may be very busy, but their receptionist or dental assistant should be able to show you an exam room. Look for a clean, tidy work area, comfortable chairs, good lighting and equipment that is in good condition.

Ask them to show you the cosmetic dentist’s portfolio, or before and after pictures from other patients. Inquire about the level of experience the dentist has in different procedures, as well as the types of technology they use to perform their work.

2. Get Financing in Place

Once you have selected a cosmetic dentist you are confident in, book a consultation. The cosmetic dentist will have you fill out a questionnaire about your overall health and oral health history. Give as much relevant information as possible, including past surgeries, medications and dental procedures to ensure that they have all of the information they need to properly evaluate your needs.

The cosmetic dentist will examine your mouth and may take x-rays or other pictures to help them determine the extent of the damage.

Ask questions about your treatment options including preparation, recovery time and what results you can expect. If you are unsure of any of the terms your dentist uses, ask them to further explain.

Once your cosmetic dentist has determined the type and amount of work you need done, ask for a written estimate. Perhaps you’ve been saving for this treatment for awhile, or you may have credit or a loan you can use to fund the makeover. Once you have a cost estimate in mind, you can make sure that you have the financing in place.

Many cosmetic dentists offer payment plans, as they understand that not everyone can afford to pay for the treatment upfront. Discuss your financial situation with them to see what type of arrangement you can make.

With financing in place, you are ready to book your treatment appointments!

3. Design a Custom Cosmetic Dentistry Treatment Plan

Work closely with your cosmetic dentist to formulate a treatment plan that works for both of you. Some treatments, such as dental implants, require more than one visit.

Others, like root canals, require a bit of recovery time. Make sure you set this time aside in your schedule to prepare, have the work done and recover.

If you are having several procedures done, discuss the schedule with your cosmetic dentist. They may choose to do several in one visit, or to leave recovery time between each step. If you are getting crowns or implants, make sure you will have a temporary piece to cover the damage from the preparation until the permanent solutions are ready.

4.

Follow Your Cosmetic Dentist’s Instructions to the Letter

Listen to your cosmetic dentist! Follow their instructions for preparation exactly. After all, cosmetic dentistry is not cheap and you don’t want to sabotage your treatment. For example, most cosmetic dentists require that you stop smoking (or cut back dramatically) if you are having dental implants done. There is a good reason for this: the risk of the implant failing to join to the bone increases if you continue to smoke. When your dentist tells you not to chew hard foods with a temporary piece in, don’t do it.

It’s simply not work the risk of ruining the work that has be done so far.

5. Treasure Your New Glamorous Smile!

After-care instructions are crucial. Your dentist will give you a detailed oral hygiene plan after the work is completed. Regular brushing, flossing and check-ups are still important, but you may need to avoid certain foods, stop smoking, use special mouth washes or take other measures to make sure your smile stays white, bright and glistening for years to come.

If you play sports, always wear a mouth guard to protect your investment.

Avoid hard candies, which can cause chipping or cracking and lead to tooth decay. Food items such blueberries, coffee, tea and wine are major culprits in staining teeth, so avoid these whenever possible. If you can’t kick your coffee habit, use a straw.

Most cosmetic treatments, such as teeth whitening and bridges, have a “shelf life”. They will last longer with proper care, but they won’t last forever. Ask your cosmetic dentist when you should expect to have the treatment repeated, or any of your fixtures replaced.

Inspect your teeth monthly for signs of wear, decay or damage. Report any troublesome signs or symptoms to your cosmetic dentist. If problems are caught early on, they may be easier to fix.

Why You Should Consider Mexico For Dental Care

Written on October 1st, 2009 by adminno shouts

There are many reasons why a person should consider Mexico, not just as an alternative source, but as the prime source for dental care. This article will elaborate the first reason, and list list the others. In subsequent articles, each subsequent reason will be discussed. Here is reason number one: 1. The cost factor. Because of the system in America, the costs in America have gotten out of hand. The education of a dentist in the USA is out of sight, and a dentist will graduate with a huge debt load of student loans that have to be paid back.

Also, the costs of operation are so very high. Rent, salaries, workman’s comp for employees, taxes, insurance, and especially malpractice insurance, all combine to make a dental practice have a huge overhead. Thus, a dentist in the USA must charge more, and indeed feel the should make an even larger profit because of all the costs they have incurred in getting educated and setting up a practice. However, in Mexico a dentist gets just as good an education, but does not have to pay but a fraction of the cost for that education.

The Mexican government also subsidizes the education of a dentist, and gets its payback by requiring 2 years of unpaid service of each dentist to provide free care to the needy. Also, the overhead, the rent, the salaries, etc are all minimal in comparison, and, there is no need for malpractice insurance since the dentists can’t be so easily be sued by some money grubber. The result is, a dentist in Mexico has a much lower overhead, and can still make a good profit charging much less. The average costs for dental work in places like Tijuana, Mexico, where the vast majority of Americans go to for dental care, is about of the costs in America.

For example, a standard porcelain crown with the core build up in Mexico costs $225, where as the same thing in the US will average over $1,000. Or, a root canal costs just $225 in Mexico, compared to $1,150 in the States. When a person in the US has major dental problems, it can easily run up to over $10,000 to get treatment, but if you can imagine being able to get the same thing done for just $2,500, you can understand why so many people feel that it is worth the trip. 2. The quality of dental care in Mexico is superior.

3. There is ease of access to Mexico, especially Tijuana. 4. A safe environment can be provided. 5. Lodging is inexpensive, the food is great, there are fun things to do, and it makes a great place to just have a little vacation while you are having treatments.
