There are a lot of questions people have about supplemental dental plans, but there a few important things to understand how this kind of care is much different from regular medical insurance. The kind of coverage that is provided by most dental insurance companies is preventative.
That is, it will pay for things like cleanings, x-rays, fluoride treatments, and regular check-ups.
Even if you already have medical insurance you may not automatically have dental insurance provided by your employer. And even if you do have some sort of coverage, it may not cover all of the work that you need to have done on your teeth. The main reason that supplemental plans were developed was to help people pay for those extra dental needs that was not covered by other policies and plans.
Often you will be able to choose the dentist you want in your local area that is on a specified list in their network. These are also called PPO plans, as you cannot select a dentist from out side of that network list, but you can check with your current office to see if it is one of the ones on the list already.
The main difference between a regular insurance plan and a supplemental dental plan is in how you pay your bills.
Some plans require you to pay everything in full and you will be compensated later on, but most of the good plans allow you to receive a discount right at the counter and pay only a fraction of the full costs, without having to wait for a reimbursement.
